  • I was coming home from work on Monday night when the call came out.  It was 8pm.  I had made a very quick stop at the grocery store before that.  The call ringed out from my Minitor V as a "head on accident".  I was about 15 minutes away at 60mph but I ramped it up to 80mph.  I'd have pushed it harder but with traffic and my expired license I didn't want to risk things.

As I approached, I put on the hazards to alert the traffic behind me that something was amiss.  My redlight was in my Jeep and I was in the Jetta.  Note: Buy another redlight.

Our Rescue Engine had just gotten there as well as FEMA and Loudoun County by the time I arrived.  I pulled off into the median, tore of my work shirt, grabbed my camera and head to the scene.

With no gear I could not aid in the rescue efforts.  Not directly anyway. I helped with cribbing and deploying rescue tools.  And I cleared vehicle parts out of the road for the ambulances.  But mostly I took pictures and a couple videos.  Note: I REALLY need a better camera.

    ^^ All volunteers!!

^^ Our Rescue Engine.  Every month I write a check for $3,148.52 for it.

^^ Her on the cot.  Notice her limp arm and hand by the ground.  Breaks my heart.

^^  Her car.  What an impact.  Her "shoes", ie, maybe flip flops were left on the floor.

The helicopter came in but I think she was done.  I don't know for sure.

Here is the helo.  The wind was impressive.  The guy next to me, his hat flew into me and I also lost my own.  Oh well.

I wish I could have done more.

I have 55 other pictures but I just can't edit and post them now.  This will have to do.

Hug your loved ones.  They may not be here tomorrow.

  • I can't help but marvel at how the car came apart.

    'Tis tragic.

  • That is horrible... It is scary to think about how these things can happen. :(

  • God, seeing those photos is a real wake up call!

  • It's really good to hear from another rescue provider that seeing people in bad situations breaks the heart... I was starting to think I was the only one. My dad was pretty badly smashed up in a similar MVA... major intrusion into the driver's side compartment, broke both his legs, etc etc etc... much fun.

    Catch ya later.
